BURLINGTON, Vt. – U.S. Rep. Peter Welch’s Senate campaign on Tuesday launched a new TV ad.
The ad, shot in response to last week’s leaked draft Supreme Court decision, highlights Welch’s commitment to codifying the right to abortion into law. In the House, Welch co-sponsored and helped pass the Women’s Health Protection Act — and he believes the Senate must do so as well, even if that requires the Senate abolishing the filibuster.
U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell has said, if the draft opinion striking down Roe v. Wade becomes the court’s final ruling, it is possible that Republicans in Congress will seek to legislate a nationwide ban on abortion. As Republicans seek to criminalize abortion and punish people for exercising their constitutional rights, the 2022 midterm elections, including the Senate race in Vermont, are set to decide the future of reproductive freedom.
The full ad can be seen here and the transcript is below:
This is a moment I hoped we’d never see
The Supreme Court is on the verge of overturning Roe v. Wade, a decision that’s protected women for half a century.
We cannot go backwards.
I voted for legislation to make Roe v. Wade permanent.
We can’t let the McConnell Republicans take control of the Senate and take away a woman’s right to choose.
I’m Peter Welch and I approve this message, because, as your senator, I will never back down in this fight.
